Fr. W. Weiskotten, 1851-1853

The following is from Saleste, Paul H., Ninetieth Anniversary of Saint John's Evangelical and Reformed Church, January 1, 1935. (Spelling and grammar as in the original.)

The third minister Rev. Fr. W. Weiskotten influenced the congregation to affiliate with the "Evangelical Society of Churches", the eastern organization of what later became the Evangelical Synod of N. A. This is the minister furthest back, to whom baptisms of some men and women still living members of the church, can be traced. The beginnings of our Sunday School seem to come in this time, as near as can be ascertained, in the year 1852. Yet every beginning is a seed, and what a glorious harvest we now have in our present fine Sunday School.

Then came 1851. Rev. Fr. W. Weiskotten appears on the scene. From where, we don't know. The outstanding event in his term of office is the fact that during his pastorate the church affiliated with "The Evangelical Society of Churches," later to become the Evangelical Synod of America. Another worthy accomplishment is the beginning of the Sunday School during his pastorate. Convincing evidence of this fact is lacking. We have just the whisperings of the past, that "St. John's Sunday School, the "School that Does Things," was begun in 1852.
